A horror writer, John (Bates), and his fickle girlfriend, Shirley (Barrington), find themselves witnesses to the depravities of the damned following a car accident.
The Devil (Criswell) demands entertainment from the female souls under his control.'Wood'-ness
As this is the only film Ed made with Stephen Apostolof (their first together) that featured one of the actors from Ed's heyday (Criswell), this is the true transisition film for Ed. From this point onward his involvement in the works of his filmography becomes less and less. The few times he directs are in cheaper and cheaper productions.
Still, it's interesting to see things like day to night transistions (an Ed staple) in this film, since Ed didn't direct it. The dialogue (what there is of it) is classic Ed and the sets and costumes couldn't be cheesier.
Also of note is the fact that Criswell's opening and closing speeches are taken almost word for word from Ed's film Night of the Ghouls, which remained unreleased at the time.
As long as you're not offended by the many nude dance sequences (and they're almost too goofy to be offensive) this is a definite buy.Best Line
